The word “cob” comes from an old English term meaning “a lump” or “rounded mass,” reflecting the way the material is shaped by hand. This method creates organic, flowing walls that are both strong and beautiful.
How it Works:
Clay, sand, and straw are mixed—often by foot or hand—until they form a thick, sticky material.
The mixture is then placed in lumps directly onto the wall foundation.
Builders sculpt the walls upward by hand, layer by layer, allowing complete design freedom for curves, arches, niches, and built-in furniture.
